# How to unbounce a contact in HubSpot

[By \- Jonas,](https://koalify.io/blog/author/jonas) Oct 08, 2026

![ Featured Image](https://koalify.io/hs-fs/hubfs/If%20the%20address%20was%20right%20unbounce%20it%20in%20HubSpot.png?width=352&height=372&name=If%20the%20address%20was%20right%20unbounce%20it%20in%20HubSpot.png)

A customer replies to a sales email asking why they never got your newsletter. You check their record, and there it is: a "Contact has bounced" banner, a hard bounce from eight months ago, and HubSpot quietly leaving them out of every marketing send since.

The address works. They just emailed you from it. But HubSpot doesn't know that, and it won't take your word for it without a few checks.

This guide covers the two situations you're likely in. If the address was wrong, you don't need to unbounce anything; you need to fix the address. If the address was right all along, you can unbounce the contact, as long as you meet HubSpot's requirements. Here's how to tell which, and exactly what to click.

If you're dealing with a lot of bounces rather than one wrongly flagged contact, start with the [HubSpot bounce rate guide](https://koalify.io/hubspot-bounce-rate) instead.

![How to unbounce a contact in HubSpot](https://koalify.io/hs-fs/hubfs/How%20to%20unbounce%20a%20contact%20in%20HubSpot.png?width=400&height=138&name=How%20to%20unbounce%20a%20contact%20in%20HubSpot.png)

## Fix the address or unbounce the contact?

Start with one fact most guides miss: HubSpot ties a bounce to the email *address*, not the contact. HubSpot's documentation is explicit that once you update a contact's email address, the contact is no longer treated as bounced. So a typo never needs an unbounce. It needs a correction.

Open the contact record, check the **Email hard bounce reason** property, and match it to what you know:

| Your situation | What to do | Unbounce needed? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The address has a typo (`jane@acme.con`) or the person has a new address | Correct the email address on the record | No |
| The address is correct, and the bounce came from a temporary server problem that's now resolved | Confirm with the contact, then unbounce | Yes |
| The bounce reason says the recipient's server blocked you (policy, spam filter) | Ask the contact to add your sending IPs to their allowlist, then unbounce | Yes |
| The address is genuinely dead (person left, mailbox closed) | Leave it bounced, set the contact as non-marketing | No |
| The record shows "Contact has bounced globally" | Contact HubSpot Support | Support only |

One trap with the first row: if you change the address to one that has *also* hard bounced before, HubSpot treats the contact as bounced again straight away. Double-check the new address before you save it.

### HubSpot's requirements before you unbounce

HubSpot only lets you unbounce a contact yourself if all of these are true:

- You're on **Marketing Hub** or **Content Hub Professional or Enterprise**, sending from a **connected email sending domain**. It isn't available on HubSpot's free tools.
- You have **Super Admin** or **Marketing email** permissions.
- You've **received an email from the bounced address** confirming it's valid and that they want your marketing emails.
- Whatever caused the bounce on the recipient's server has been **resolved**.

And you'll need HubSpot Support instead if:

- You've unbounced **more than 1,000 contacts, or more than 2% of your total contacts**, this month.
- The contact has **been unbounced before**.
- The contact is a **global bounce**: an address that hard bounced in three or more HubSpot accounts.

The confirmation-email rule is the one people skip. It exists because unbouncing a dead address costs you a second hard bounce, and HubSpot would rather you didn't learn that the expensive way.

## How to unbounce a contact in HubSpot, step by step

### If the address was wrong: correct it

1. Go to **CRM \> Contacts** fiter on "email hard bounce reason is known" and open the contact with a type in the email.
2. Edit the **Email** property and enter the correct address.
3. Save. Because the bounce belonged to the old address, the contact is eligible for email again, as long as the new address has never bounced in your account.

If you keep the old address for reference, store it in a separate property or a note rather than as a secondary email, so nobody switches it back later.

![How to unbounce a contact in HubSpot, step by step](https://koalify.io/hs-fs/hubfs/How%20to%20unbounce%20a%20contact%20in%20HubSpot%2c%20step%20by%20step.png?width=400&height=259&name=How%20to%20unbounce%20a%20contact%20in%20HubSpot%2c%20step%20by%20step.png)

### If the address was right: unbounce it

1. Go to **CRM \> Contacts** fiter on "email hard bounce reason is know.
You'll findt a **Contact has bounced** alert on the record.
2. In the top left, click **Unbounce** above the contact's name.
3. In the dialog box, review the bounce details, then tick **I confirm that this email address is correct**.
4. Click **Unbounce this contact**.

### What happens next

The contact can receive marketing email again, provided they're set as a **marketing contact** and haven't unsubscribed. Unbouncing doesn't change either of those.

Anything HubSpot dropped while the contact was bounced stays dropped. If there's a specific email they missed and need, clone it and send the copy to them.

If you're asking HubSpot Support to do it instead, take a screenshot first of an email you received from the bounced address, showing the sender, recipient and time. That's the evidence Support will ask for.

## When unbouncing doesn't work

**There's no Unbounce button.** Check three things in order: your subscription (Marketing Hub or Content Hub Professional or Enterprise), your permissions (Super Admin or Marketing email), and the alert on the record. A **Contact has bounced globally** alert means the address bounced in at least three HubSpot accounts, and only Support can lift it. A contact you've unbounced once before also goes to Support.

**You've unbounced the contact, but they still don't get your emails.** Unbouncing only removes the bounce. If you set the contact as non-marketing during an earlier bounce cleanup, set them back to marketing. Check they haven't unsubscribed, and that they aren't being caught by a suppression list or the unengaged-contacts setting on your sends.

**The contact bounced again on the next send.** The address wasn't valid after all, or the server issue wasn't fixed. Don't try again yourself: a second unbounce has to go through Support anyway, and every repeat bounce counts against your sender reputation. Ask the contact for an alternative address instead.

**You need to unbounce hundreds of contacts.** There's no bulk unbounce, and once you pass 1,000 contacts or 2% of your database in a month, it's Support's call. HubSpot will also refuse to audit or remove bounces from purchased or third-party lists. If you're facing a large batch of "wrongly" bounced contacts, it's worth asking whether they're really wrong. A bulk wave of bounces usually means a bad import, not a HubSpot error.

**It's your own colleague's address that bounced.** HubSpot users have a separate process. A Super Admin goes to **Settings \> Users & Teams**, hovers over the user, and picks **Actions \> Unbounce email**. Until then, that user won't receive HubSpot notification emails.

![When unbouncing doesnt work in HubSpot](https://koalify.io/hs-fs/hubfs/When%20unbouncing%20doesnt%20work%20in%20HubSpot.png?width=300&height=344&name=When%20unbouncing%20doesnt%20work%20in%20HubSpot.png)

## Stop valid contacts bouncing in the first place

Every unbounce is a cleanup after the damage. The bounce already counted against your rate, the contact already missed months of email, and you can only fix it one record at a time. The cheaper move is catching the bad address before HubSpot ever sends to it.

Most of the bounces you'll end up unbouncing or correcting start the same way: a typo on a form, a guessed address from an enrichment tool, an import from an old CRM. Checking each address when it enters HubSpot catches them while they're still easy to fix, before a send turns them into a hard bounce.

That's what Koalify's email validation does without leaving HubSpot. A workflow action checks every new or updated contact and writes the result, and the reason behind it, to a native HubSpot property. You can see that `jane@acme.con` is invalid the day she fills in the form, correct it, and the hard bounce never happens. A card on the contact record lets you check any address in one click, which is also a quick way to sanity-check an address before you unbounce it.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I unbounce a contact in HubSpot?** Open the contact record, click **Unbounce** above the contact's name, tick **I confirm that this email address is correct**, and click **Unbounce this contact**. You need Super Admin or Marketing email permissions, a Professional or Enterprise Marketing Hub or Content Hub subscription, and a connected sending domain.

**Do I need to unbounce a contact after fixing a typo in their email?** No. HubSpot attaches the bounce to the email address, not the contact. Once you correct the address, the contact is no longer treated as bounced, unless the new address has also bounced in your account before.

**Why can't I unbounce a contact in HubSpot?** Usually one of five reasons: you're on HubSpot's free tools or a Starter plan, you lack the right permissions, the contact is a global bounce, the contact has been unbounced before, or you've already unbounced more than 1,000 contacts or 2% of your database this month. The last three need HubSpot Support.

**What is a global bounce in HubSpot?** An address that has hard bounced in three or more HubSpot accounts. The contact record shows a "Contact has bounced globally" alert, and only HubSpot Support can unbounce it.

**Can I unbounce contacts in bulk?** No. Unbouncing is one contact at a time, and past 1,000 contacts or 2% of your contacts in a month, HubSpot Support has to handle it. If you need to unbounce that many, check whether the bounces came from a bad import first.

**Will an unbounced contact get the emails they missed?** No. Emails dropped while they were bounced stay dropped. Clone and resend any email they need.

## Conclusion

Most wrongly bounced contacts don't need an unbounce at all. If the address was wrong, correct it and the bounce goes with it. If the address was right, get a confirming email from the contact, make sure the cause is fixed, and unbounce once. HubSpot makes the second time harder for good reason.

The contacts you never have to unbounce are the ones whose address was checked on the way in. If you'd like to see how many addresses in your portal would bounce on the next send, you can check without leaving HubSpot.
